UNDERSTAND THE METRIC
Definition
Training person-hours add the time received by participants. For people completing the same full course, completed person-hours equal the number of completers multiplied by course duration, excluding breaks. Completion percentage is completed people divided by assigned people, multiplied by 100.
When to use it
Use this to report full-course training volume and completion coverage for one course/cohort and reporting period. Scheduled hours are assigned people multiplied by full-course duration; completed hours count full-duration completers.
Formula
Completed training person-hours = completed people × course duration in hours. Scheduled training person-hours = assigned people × course duration. Completion (%) = completed ÷ assigned × 100. Outstanding people = assigned − completed.

Inputs and interpretation
- Enter the course duration in hours, excluding breaks. Thirty minutes = 0.5 hours; 90 minutes = 1.5 hours. A multi-session course can use its total instructional duration.
- This calculation assumes the same full duration for everyone counted as completed. It excludes partial attendance and training received by non-completers. Use actual attendance hours for a report of all training delivered.
- For courses or groups with different durations, calculate each separately and sum non-overlapping person-hours. Do not sum course durations alone and call that participant training hours.
- These are Sentivo administrative calculations, not training-hour formulas, minimum durations, percentage formulas or pass thresholds prescribed by OSHA. The OSHA source below supports the training purpose and approach.
- Count each person once for the same course/cohort. Do not mix course attendances with unique people or mix different reporting dates.
- Training hours, completion or attendance do not by themselves establish knowledge, practical competence or fulfilment of every applicable training duty. Verify the required learning or performance separately.
- If nobody is assigned, the percentage is undefined; the tool shows “Not applicable”, not 0% or 100%.
