Permit to work awareness
Workers and supervisors involved in permit-controlled work
What learners will practise.
- Explain how a permit coordinates hazardous work.
- Check scope, controls and interfaces before starting.
- Respond correctly to suspension, handover and completion.
- Apply the course decisions to a worked case and justify a response to the capstone.
- Record control evidence, responsible roles and stop/escalation conditions in the workplace worksheet.

Start with understanding.
A permit formalises authorisation and communication for defined work with significant hazards. It supports risk assessment and safe methods; it does not replace them. Permit categories and role titles vary between organisations. This course does not appoint an issuer, receiver or gas tester.
Then make a decision.
A hot-work permit covers welding on pipe A in bay 2. The crew is moved to pipe B in bay 3. A neighbouring team is cleaning with a flammable solvent. The permit has time remaining.
Discuss: What are the facts, what could go wrong, and what must be verified before proceeding?
Make it specific to your workplace.
- Permit categories and authorised role names
- Validity, suspension and revalidation rules
- Isolation, testing and simultaneous-operation requirements
Before deployment, confirm these details with the client’s responsible technical reviewer. The course is a starting point for awareness learning, not a replacement for approved work procedures.
